Located about ninety kilometers northwest of San Jose, Costa Rica, you will find the amazing Arenal Volcano. It is in the province of Alajuela in the little town of La Fortuna. It is known to be the most active volcano in the country of Costa Rica. Specialists consider Arenal as the youngest not to mention the most active mountains in all of Costa Rica.
Arenal has been considered a volcano since the 1800’s, although in those times it had other names such as Costa Rica Volcano or Rio Frio. Some estimates say that the volcano is more than 4000 years old. This portion of Costa Rica was unknown up until 1937, when a group of explorers discovered the top that same year.
The most infamous explosion of the Arenal Volcano occurred in 1968 following over 400 years of inactivity. That eruption ruined the entire region of Arenal, and stole the lives of 87 individuals. It finally affected around 232 square kilometers and went on for several days. The explosion was so powerful that it created three additional craters. From the time of this massive explosion, the volcano has continued to be active and anyone can see tiny eruptions very frequently, mostly at night.
The Arenal Volcano is quite a well-visited tourist location, the majority of the visitors enjoying the nightly eruptions not to mention the famous hot springs. The most well-known hot spring around La Fortuna is Tabacon. Arenal Volcano is one of other seven volcanoes situated in all of Costa Rica.
